In this course, clinicians at all levels will learn about child and adolescent anger and dysregulation and various treatment options. In addition, the course will explore anger and dysregulation in children through an understanding of the Polyvagal Theory, a more modern look at these issues. Through this lens, clinicians will expand their understanding of these problems and learn to develop personal clinical protocols to work with childhood anger and dysregulation.

Module 1

  • Discuss causes and definitions of anger & aggression in young children
  • Adaptive & maladaptive aggression & subtypes
  • Prevalence of aggression, antisocial behavior & suicide
  • Understanding the internal, societal & cultural components that contribute to cycles of anger & trauma
  • Profound clinical implications of being bullied, teased, harassed
  • Gender differences, relational aggression. Explain how males and females differ on average in terms of aggression.

Module 2

  • Discuss causes of anger and aggression in adolescents (continuum, normal vs. a condition)
  • Youth Risk Behavior Survey (TRBS) trends
  • Connections between anger, learning differences, ADHD, disruptive (ODD), impulse control, conduct disorders and trauma (TSRD)
  • How anger is experienced and processed in the child & adolescent brain
  • Increase knowledge of family factors
  • Holistic approach

Module 3

  • Understanding protective and risk factors to prevent youth violence
  • Integrated models for treatment of aggression and related behaviors in children & adolescents: identifying high-risk children before maladaptive aggressive behavior becomes entrenched
  • Summarize individual difference variables related to aggression
  • Common characteristics of families with self-harming adolescents, psychopathology & aggression
  • Developing targeted prevention efforts

Module 4

  • Understanding the Polyvagal Theory and Dysregulation in Children
  • Three basic pathways of Regulation and Dysregulation in Children
  • Using the Three Pathways in Clinical Case Conceptualization
  • How neuroception affects the Three Pathways
  • Role of co-regulation, warmth and interpersonal engagement

Module 5

  • Creating a treatment template using Polyvagal Theory
  • Treatment interventions for C&A dysregulation based on the three pathways

Module 6

  • Describe primary clinical considerations for evaluations and treatment planning for Anger Management
  • Identify strategies and approaches in coaching parents, caregivers, & educators to support anger management
  • Articulate main components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
  • Describe Aggression Replacement Therapy
  • The power of group work with adolescents
